2023 was a tough year at The Walt Disney Company. Despite releasing countless movies throughout the year, only a few saw success, while others became some of Disney”s largest box office disasters of all time. Now, CEO Bob Iger is looking to turn that around.

One of the most common complaints about the Walt Disney Company is the sheer amount of movie and television series coming out from Marvel Studios, often seen as the company choosing quantity over quality. And according to a recent report, Bob Iger simultaneously agrees and disagrees.

During a recent conference hosted by Morgan Stanley in San Francisco, CA, Iger addressed how Disney is going to make some major changes to right the ship. However, he doesn”t believe that the problem is with audience exhaustion over superhero films.

“A lot of people think it’s audience fatigue, it’s not audience fatigue. They want great films. And if you build it great, they will come and there are countless examples of that. Some are ours, and some are others. Oppenheimer (2023) is a perfect example of that. Just a fantastic film.”

While it seems that Iger has confused audiences” being tired of Marvel films with just being tired of movies in general, the Disney Chief Executive Officer extrapolated on the point, suddenly agreeing with the criticism and the need to scale back on content.

“Focus is really important. We reduced the output of Marvel, both number of films they make, and the number of TV shows, and that really becomes critical, but I feel good about the team. I feel good about the IP we’re making. I talked about a lot of the projects. We look years ahead, really. And it’s iterative.”

This makes Iger”s stance on the situation even more confusing. Is Disney cutting back on content because audiences are overwhelmed by the sheer output of new movies, or is the audience not getting tired of all the Marvel movies that have been rushed to theaters? It seems Disney got lucky that the Writers” and Actors” Strikes caused everything to be postponed.

Still, Disney seems to be setting itself up for success in 2024, with all of its focus being put on Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) and animated sequels it knows will succeed, like Inside Out 2 (2024) and Moana 2 (2024).
