Feminist Icon Declares ‘Barbie’ "Emasculating" – Inside the Magic
In a surprising revelation, an international celebrity and feminist icon absolutely hated Barbie (2023) for how it treated the men in the film.

Without a doubt, Barbie was the biggest hit of 2023. Not only was it a financial success, earning well over $1.4 billion at the box office, but it received critical acclaim and earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. This was because of the excellent direction and writing from Greta Gerwig and delightful performances from Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, and so many more.
While many people loved the film for its perfect representation of the Barbie doll from Mattel and its pro-women themes, others were angry at how it emasculated the men in the film. This includes international star and feminist icon Shakira.
Shakira Hated “Barbie”: “It Was Emasculating”
International music sensation Shakira has been an outspoken feminist for her entire career, often speaking about how women have moved forward and should “get to be themselves and be unapologetic.” However, she doesn”t believe that this should come at the cost of men “being men.” It”s this philosophy that has caused her to air grievances against Greta Gerwig”s Barbie.
“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I”m raising two boys. I want “em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”

She continued:
“I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

When asked about whether women should be able to do it all, Shakira simply asked back, “Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?”
Naturally, this has prompted backlash from fans of the singer, with many declaring that she has completely missed the point of the film. And they”re not wrong. Barbie is not about “women are good, men are bad.” It”s about not having to keep an identity just because the world tells you to. Barbie doesn”t have to be able to do everything and Ken doesn”t have to just be relegated to being her sidekick. As long as you”re yourself and accept others, that”s more than enough.
