New: Tim Burton’s ‘Wednesday’ No Longer Returning to Netflix as Predicted – Inside the Magic
If you were planning on watching Wednesday this year, we are sorry to inform you that season two of the hit Netflix series will no longer be coming to the streaming platform in 2024.
Tim Burton”s latest spooky masterpiece, Wednesday, took Netflix by storm in 2022.
Following the iconic Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega) as she navigates adolescence at Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outcasts. Drawing inspiration from Charles Addams” timeless franchise, Wednesday, centered around the beloved Addams Family”s teenage daughter, shattered streaming records, emerging as one of Netflix”s most successful ventures to date. A significant contributor to the show”s triumph was the stellar performance of its lead actress, Jenna Ortega, who adeptly embodied Wednesday”s enigmatic aura and delivered deadpan lines, much to the delight of viewers.
Despite its instant acclaim and the assured renewal for a second season, an unavoidable delay ensued.
Last year, similar to the writers, members of SAG advocated for improved pay and opposed the decline in residuals. In a letter addressed to leadership in June, SAG-AFTRA stated, “This is an unprecedented moment of change in our industry, and what might have been considered acceptable in previous years falls short today.” The letter continued, expressing concerns about the erosion of wages, artistic integrity, and the influence of the union over the past decade. It emphasized the necessity for a significant overhaul of minimum pay and new media residuals in light of inflation and the continuous growth of streaming platforms.
During a CNBC interview, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that he thought the strikers were not being “realistic.” “It’s very disturbing to me. We’ve talked about disruptive forces on this business and all the challenges we’re facing, the recovery from COVID which is ongoing, it’s not completely back. This is the worst time in the world to add to that disruption,” Iger said. “I understand any labor organization’s desire to work on behalf of its members to get the most compensation and be compensated fairly based on the value that they deliver… There’s a level of expectation that they have, that is just not realistic. And they are adding to the set of the challenges that this business is already facing that is, quite frankly, very disruptive.” Naturally, his comments weren”t exactly met with cheers.
Thankfully, after 118 days, the SAG-AFTRA strike had come to an end.
“We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers,” the union explained in an email. “Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work.”
Union representative Ben Whitehair called the deal a “massive win” for actors.
“When performers understand what was gained, they are going to be thrilled,” he said. This historic feat comes barely a month after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) ratified their contract. Their negotiations began earlier this year, when—for the first time in over six decades—the WGA and SAG-AFTRA joined forces.
While the strike did end well, it did push back filming for many projects, including Wednesday.
While we knew that Wednesday would be filming season 2 in Ireland in April, we now have a wrap date for the project. The Hollywood Handle shared:

What”s on Netflix shared that there has been a new casting notice for extras as well.
“After months of delays, Wednesday is currently gearing up for production on its highly anticipated second season. After reports came out late last year that the show is moving to Ireland, a few new casting calls have confirmed whether the show will be filming and how long it’ll be filming for.
This new round of casting is primarily for background actors from all the calls issued thus far. As we’ve covered previously, Netflix and MGM Television have already been casting some of the new season regulars. Back in early December, we learned about three new characters: Karloff, Wolfgang, and Annie. In January 2024, we learned they were recruiting for a theater music teacher and a new character called Bruno.
According to the listings, filming will take place in the Eastern county of Wicklow. The same location was recently used for MGM’s other Netflix series, Vikings: Valhalla.”
The primary announcement indicates that the show (which is called NERO online) is seeking “individuals of all backgrounds and ethnicities, including adults and teenagers, who are available from late April to November.” They express interest in those with distinctive appearances, unconventional styles, and distinctive characteristics. Furthermore, they are actively seeking twins and triplets for roles. Here is where you can apply.
So, while the show will not be able to debut in 2024 due to the wrap date being too close to the end of the year, it does seem likely that we will get a 2025 release, alongside Stranger Things.
The upcoming season of Wednesday promises to take a darker turn compared to its predecessor, featuring less emphasis on romance. This shift follows the removal of the character Xavier Thorpe, portrayed by Percy Hynes White, amidst unfounded allegations against the actor, who was intended to be Wednesday”s gradual romantic interest.
Additionally, fans can anticipate the introduction of a new member of The Addams Family, a first for the series. Furthermore, the episodes will adopt a more cinematic style, reflecting Jenna Ortega”s preference for film over television, especially now that she has taken on a producer role in the show.
